LED Type
SMD LED and COB LED are the main light source for LED tri-proof light.
1.COB LED, Chip on Board (COB) high bay luminaires. Bridgelux is the famous brand among the COB LEDs. This type is the most popular one during these years, well, is it the best one? Let’s see the luminous efficiency of COB LED, normally, it is from 65-85 lumen per watt, it is not good enough for being the best LED high bay light.
The beam angle for COB LED is usually narrow from 35-90 degree, due to the requirements of anti-glare, the light source will be put inside of reflective aluminum cover. However, it is the cheapest solution among the three types.
2.SMD LED, “SMD LED” is an abbreviation for Surface-Mounted-Device Light-Emitting Diode, the manufacturer adopt many super bright SMD LEDs such as 2835, 5050,etc. Most of the bay lights from Gorgeous Lighting Co.,Ltd. are produced by SMD type.LM-79, LM 80 tests and reports are performed in accordance to IESNA standards.
COB model usually made in several pieces COB LEDs integrated in one board, the LEDs are placed in the center of the light, the output light from one point is very strong, it will be uncomfortable for people that one place is too bright.
However, SMD LED version is different. We install many pieces of SMD LEDs in the aluminum plates, and made these LEDs being a light surface rather than just a point. The output light is more uniform, and the luminous efficiency is the highest among the three types.

More About SMD LED
The general SMD LED manufactured in China has three types of LED chip:
1) Chinese companies, such as San’an
2) Taiwan companies, such as Epistar
3) Others, such as Samsung, Cree, etc.
Like most of the consumers in the world, as a Chinese LED light company, we prefer to adopt most cost-effective light source for our LED tri-proof light.
We mainly use Taiwan and brand LED chips, Chinese LED chips are not the option for us doesn’t mean the quality or the price is not good, but our quality control management regard the LED chip as one of the key part for long working of tri-proof light, which must be approved by years. Chinese companies are late-comers in the LED chip market, which are developing very fast in recent years, but no longer than Taiwan or other companies in the world. In conclusion, in order to guarantee the quality of LED, we prefer well-developed LED chip to new developing one.
We always pursue high quality LED as the light source, brand LED doesn’t always equal to most suitable product for our light. Our Optical Engineer is good at designing the light distribution by using the most suitable LED, such as chip size, COB or SMD etc.

#1 Luminous Efficacy
Higher luminous efficacy means higher output brightness or cost less energy. Luminous Efficacy is the ratio of luminous flux to power. The SMD LED we used for our LED tri-proof light is from 100-140 lumen per watt, different manufacturers have vary luminous efficacy, the higher luminous efficacy, the better LED tri-proof light will be.
#2 LED Driver
LED driver is the core part of any kind of LED light products. We have noted that, in the past few years, LED light was broken due to LED driver failed, though LED was good. The lifetime of LED driver is not as long as LED, which has a 35,000 hours in general, but depending on different use condition. Therefore, the life of an LED light is mainly determined by the lifetime of the LED driver employed.
Power efficiency
The power efficiency of a good LED driver should be more than 85%. The higher power efficiency is, the less power consumer will be.
There are several benefits to use high-efficiency LED drivers. The first thing is saving more energy, low the cost, (according to above calculation method for the power of led driver). #3 Dimming function
LED dimming performance is determined by Driver capability and compatibility with the dimming equipment. Multiple compatibility issues are rooted in circuit level interactions between the LED Driver and dimmer. Good LED dimming solutions are available today. Dimming can reduce energy consumption and enhance a space’s function.
Drivers can enable dimming and color-changing or sequencing of LEDs. LEDs are easily integrated with circuits to control dimming and color-changing so that these functions can respond to preset commands or occupant presence or commands.
The two main dimming methods for dimming the LED lights:
- Coincident AC power and control signal:
Phase-cut AC sine wave
a. Forward Phase Control Dimming (Triac dimming, Leading-edge or SCR dimming)
b. Reverse Phase Control Dimming (Trailing edge dimming) - Separate AC power and control signal
